2004 JKASP: Japan-Kuril-Aleutian Arc Subduction Processes Biannual Conference, Petropavolosky-Kamchatsky, Russia

The city...
That's Viluchinski volcano to the far left. We saw it from the other side while traveling behind Mutnovsky. See Mutnovsky West . That's Avacha Bay with the fishing fleet to the lower right.
This area is sort-of down town. the water in the foreground is Kultuchnoye Lake. Part of Avacha Bay is in the mid-section right of the image. A power plant smoke stack is off in the distance.
Fishing is a big things in Petropavlosk. But, as with most regions, there are a lot of probelms causing it to be a depeletd source of economic stability. Check out what the Business Information Service for the Newly Independent States has to say about it as for last wummer.
Still mainly downtown, you can see more of Kultuchnoye Lake and the shipping vessels. You can participate in a Walking Tour of this area via Kamchatkaexplorer.com
Avacha Bay, shipping feel port.
The Chapel of the Heroes - This chapel was built in 1912 in honor of those who died in the Anglo-French War in 1854.
From a vantage, typical housing, roads and streets of the city. Note teh large gold-domed Russian Orthodox Church in the center.
A pano of the city from our perch. The volcano is either Avachinisky or Koryakskaya.
Close-up of Viluchinski volcano, that's an atmosphere, not a volcano-genic, cloud.
Closeer-uper of Viluchinski volcano, and I still say that's an atmosphere, not a volcano-genic, cloud.
The local mall. Called Shamsa. Mainly a grocery store with a cafe, money-exchange, ATM, clothing, leather, jewerly, watch perfume and cosmetics boutiques, furniture store, and Baskin-Robbins (yeah, as in 31 flavors).
The clouds on our last day were bizzare!
